Grayscale PDF help

Choose Pictures only to keep text, shapes, links and forms unchanged, or Entire page to convert everything visible to grey. Preview the new copy before downloading.

How to use Grayscale PDF
  1. Choose a PDF with the colours you want to convert.
  2. Choose Pictures only or Entire page. For whole pages, choose a page range and resolution.
  3. Select Prepare PDF.
  4. Compare the original and result, then download your new copy.
Options explained
Pictures only
Converts separate embedded colour pictures at their original dimensions across all pages. Text and shapes retain their colours. Inline pictures need Entire page.
Entire page
Selected pages become grey pictures. Text is no longer selectable, links and comments lose interactivity on those pages, and accessibility tags are removed from the new copy.
Resolution
Higher DPI creates larger, sharper whole-page pictures. Very large pages may use a lower resolution to fit browser memory.
Limits and supported files

Standard PDFs without switchable layers or XFA. Whole-page conversion of fillable pages needs Flatten PDF first.

128 MB input/output/converted-picture working set. Each picture is limited to 12 megapixels and 8,192 pixels per side.

Up to 500 source pages; 100 whole pages or 200 colour pictures per run, with a two-minute deadline.

Current browsers with local workers. Included in the initial offline cache.

Each file uses the same settings independently. Review the output before sharing.

Is this a compression tool?

No. Greyscale output can be larger. Use Compress PDF if your main goal is a smaller file.

Can I keep selectable text?

Choose Pictures only. It does not change text, vector shapes, links or form fields. Choose Entire page if coloured text and shapes must also become grey.

Does it securely remove hidden data?

No. Original hidden objects and metadata may remain. Use Redact PDF or Clean PDF for the relevant purpose.

What happens to signatures and passwords?

Changing a signed PDF needs acknowledgement and invalidates its signature. Files that open without a password are unlocked locally; other files need Unlock PDF first.
