Word to PDF help

Open a Word document (.docx), make changes in the editor if you need to, and download a PDF with text you can select and search. Pages use free fonts with the same letter widths as Word's, so lines and page breaks stay close to the original. Your file stays on this device.

How to use Word to PDF

  1. Select Choose files and pick your .docx document.
  2. Check your pages in the editor. Click into the text to change words, fonts or sizes.
  3. Select Download PDF to save a PDF of the document as it looks now.
  4. To keep your changes as a Word file too, select Download Word.

Limits and supported files

Word documents saved as .docx. Older .doc files and password-protected documents are not opened. Macros never run.

Up to 50 MB per file. The first time, the page downloads the editor (about 1.5 MB) and the fonts your document needs. Long documents with many pictures can be slow on phones.

No set page limit. Pages break where the layout engine puts them, which is usually where Word does.

Tested in Chromium, Firefox and WebKit on a Mac, at desktop and phone width. WebKit tests do not replace a check in Safari on your own phone.

One document at a time.

Questions

Will the PDF look exactly like it does in Word?

It is usually close. Calibri, Cambria, Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New are swapped for free fonts with the same letter widths, so most lines and page breaks match Word. Other fonts get the nearest match, and their lines can move. Check the pages in the editor before you download.

Can I edit a Word document before turning it into a PDF?

Yes. Click into the page and type, as you would in Word. The toolbar changes the look of the text. Download PDF uses your changes, and Download Word saves them as a .docx file.

Are Hindi, Tamil and other Indian-language documents supported?

Yes. Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati, Punjabi, Odia and Urdu are drawn with Noto fonts, with joined letters in the right order. Gaps between words can be a little wider than in Word. Documents typed in old fonts such as Kruti Dev only look right if the text was typed in Unicode.

Can I convert .doc files or password-protected documents?

No. Open the file in Word, save it as .docx without a password, then choose it here.

What is left out of the PDF?

Charts, SmartArt, equations, text boxes and some drawn shapes may be missing or simplified. Comments are left out, and tracked changes appear as if accepted.

Is my document uploaded?

No. Your browser opens the file, lays out the pages and writes the PDF on this device. Nothing is uploaded, so there is nothing to delete later. You can check it at /verify/.
